Dehydration Experimentation
I've never been a fan of the prepackaged freezedried backpacking food, so in its place I've gotten used to bland couscous, instant potato, and ramen noodle concoctions. I've decided to step my 'trail gourmet' up a notch and make use of the dehydrator that until now has been used solely for beef jerkey and fruit.
My first experiment is drying right now. On one tray I have taco-seasoned ground beef, and on another a can of refried beans. My intention is to make tacos this weekend on the trail - rehydrate the beef and beans in camp, and bring some tortillas and cheese. Of course I will try the rehydrating at home first. I've done a lot of research and I do believe that I know the 'tricks' to getting these two ingredients to dry successfully, but I'm a bit unsure about the rehydrating part.
I'll report back here with the results - hopefully positive!
My backpacking buddy just tried the same experiment for our backpacking trip in the Cascades. This was easily the 2nd best meal of the trip and I had 4 burrito's and went to bed stuffed. The only reason it placed second was we had fresh trout the day before. I hope your taco and bean meal turns out as good!
That is brilliant! I always bring canned beans with me on short hiking trips, and sometimes on backpacking trips if I feel like I need a treat and don't mind the extra weight. I love the dehydrating idea. Definitely going to try that soon. :)
