Trail Food: April 2007 Archives

I've never been a fan of the prepackaged freezedried backpacking food, so in its place I've gotten used to bland couscous, instant potato, and ramen noodle concoctions. I've decided to step my 'trail gourmet' up a notch and make use of the dehydrator that until now has been used solely for beef jerkey and fruit.

My first experiment is drying right now. On one tray I have taco-seasoned ground beef, and on another a can of refried beans. My intention is to make tacos this weekend on the trail - rehydrate the beef and beans in camp, and bring some tortillas and cheese. Of course I will try the rehydrating at home first. I've done a lot of research and I do believe that I know the 'tricks' to getting these two ingredients to dry successfully, but I'm a bit unsure about the rehydrating part.

I'll report back here with the results - hopefully positive!
