9 Days in the Desert: Canyons, Fossils, Petroglyphs, Phone Booths, Red Rocks, Las Vegas, and More

Dave and I regularly head for the desert over Thanksgiving week. Aside from the crowds, it is a great time to visit due to the mild weather. This year’s trip was a mishmash of a lot of places: Rainbow Basin, Mojave National Preserve, Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, and Death Valley. Rather than throw everything into one photo album, I tried to break it down by area or hike.  Trip report and photos after the jump.

Lava Beds National Monument and Loomis Peak

Since both of our employers were kind enough to give us July 3rd off in addition to Independence Day, David and I headed up to Northern California for a four-day weekend of caving and hiking. The crowds were sparse thanks to the mid-week holiday, and we were able to enjoy exploring some new caves as well as some old favorites in Lava Beds. We finished the long weekend off with a hike up Loomis Peak (thanks for the info, mtnsteve!) and some geocaching in the national forest west of Lassen National Park.
