Cinder Hill, Newberry National Volcanic Monument

Cinder Hill is a lesser-known hike in Newberry National Volcanic Monument, yet it offers one of the best views in the area. Situated at the top of the rim on the northeast side of the caldera, the sloping red cinder surface offers an unobstructed view of Paulina Peak and the Big Obsidian flow. Wildflowers bloom like crazy in early summer!

This hike follows a well-defined trail (the Newberry Crater Trail) from the Cinder Hill campground through a gap in the caldera wall to the rim. After about 2 miles, the trail connects to the rim and you can follow the relatively flat trail to the ‘summit’ of Cinder Hill. For a longer hike, plan a shuttle and continue on the Rim trail.

The trail is open to mountain bikes and horses, and is also dog friendly (on leash only). However, if you’re looking for a trail that is hiker only, check out the Paulina Lake Loop!

The trailhead is tucked away in the Cinder Hill campground and as a result, can be a bit of a challenge to find. Follow Forest Road 21 through the Monument and as it curves around the southeast side of East Lake follow the signs to Cinder Hill campground. The parking area will be on your left across from campsites 49, 50, and 51. The trail is signed and starts between campsites 50 and 51.

There are water faucets and outhouses available in the campground. Overflow parking can be found down by the boat ramp. Do not park in any campsite or you will get a ticket.
